Melodiva – Munich’s largest lesbian choir, celebrating the 30th anniversary in 2025. We stand for more than singing: Melodiva is about show and cabaret with a humorous and enigmatic view of lesbian life. We love to sing all musical genres, from pop and hit songs via rock and musicals to classical music and Bavarian mocking-songs (“diss tracks” or “battle rap”). Every three years we present a new full-length program using a story we developed ourselves, our own texts and arrangements, lively choreography, a variety of stage sets, and costumes we designed and made ourselves. We present you a polyphony of more than 30 singers, a pianist and a cajón-[box drum]-player under the professional choir-leadership of Marja Giesen. Music and great entertainment for queers and straights!

We at Melodiva are proud to have been sharing our passion for singing and entertaining through our performances and shows for 30 years now. Over the past three decades, we have performed a hundred times. By 2025, we will have staged a dozen very different evening shows, entertaining audiences with our own stage programs, stories, theater, and music repertoires—sometimes thrilling, sometimes deadly, and always guaranteed to be full of humor. In the current program, we spin the wheel of fortune and an expert presents the results of her study on the complex network of relationships between the choir members. Friendships, partnerships, ex-partnerships, friendships plus, then again without plus, or sometimes ex plus. Everything imaginable is laid out here. Find here a selection of our shows from the last 30 years: • “Melodiva dreht am Rad! Die 30-Jahre-Jubiläumsshow” (2025) | Melodiva is turning the wheel! The 30-year anniversary show • “Ein Zyklus ist vorüber – Melodiva Forever Young” (2015) | A cycle* is over – Melodiver Forever Young (*cycle in German also refers to menstruation) • “Santa Melodiva – Cowgirls zeigen keine Gnade” (2013-2014) | Santa Melodiva Cowgirls show no mercy • “Die wundersame Reise der Alice M. – Melodiva goes Wonderland” (2010) | The wonderful journey of Alice M. – Melodiva goes Wonderland” • “Singen kann tödlich sein!” (2007) | Singing can be deadly (musical crime show) • „D’Schar wars: Melodiva erzählt Dornröschen” (2003-2004) | Melodiva’s tells their lesbian version of Sleeping Beauty) • “Raumschiff Lesbenpride” (2000) | Spaceship Lesbian Pride Our trips and performances in cities far away, such as New York, Sydney, and Paris, are certainly among our highlights. When we made a guest appearance in Amsterdam in 2016, a dream came true for our Dutch choir director Marja: conducting the choir in the Concertgebouw. We were also very grateful to co-host Various Voices in Munich in 2018. And we are especially happy that we as a choir have been able to endure and survive the difficult times of the coronavirus pandemic. Find here are a few statements from our singers who have been with us since our founding in 1995: “When I co-founded the choir 30 years ago, I never imagined that I would pursue a hobby for so long and with such passion. The fact that Melodiva still exists after such a long time fills me with great pride and confidence for the next decades of choir singing. Everything has become much more professional over the years and the tasks are increasingly shared among many shoulders. I am very grateful for the many long-standing friendships that have developed in and through Melodiva.” “When I think about the anniversary, I get a slight shiver: with joy! It’s amazing that we’ve been getting together every week for 30 years to sing, put together programs, and then perform them… Melodiva isn’t a fun choir, but a choir that has fun. We write real scripts, work with props and appropriate stage sets, and slip into different roles with costumes. Regular voice training, choir rehearsal weekends, and a very dedicated choir director mean that it’s more than just singing. I would say: come and see for yourself!” Even the singers who are still quite new to the choir are delighted: “I went to a taster rehearsal with my girlfriend during Pride Week 2023 and immediately felt very comfortable in this large community of unique singers. We were given a very warm welcome.” We all rave about our long-standing choir director Marja: “Marja has a wonderful energy that really shines during performances, is reflected in us as a choir, and carries us forward.”, “I feel that we have also grown together as people.”, “What always inspires me about rehearsals is that we have continuously developed with and through Marja, both in terms of warm-ups and the increasingly demanding choir arrangements. This means that we have not stood still musically, but have developed a wonderful own Melodiva sound.” Finally, Marja gives us the last words: “Music doesn’t know any boundaries. Our goal remains to reach new people, build bridges, and reflect the diversity of our society through music over the next 30 years.”

Various Voices Brussels 2026 certainly means something different to each individual in our choir community. What unites us all is the joy of singing, the anticipation and excitement of performing, traveling to Belgium and perhaps getting a taste of the atmosphere and flair of Brussels for the first time, seeing and hearing other choirs, and getting to know different performance venues. Another highlight will definitely be meeting other queer people from all over the world, but also seeing “old” acquaintances again. We also see Various Voices Brussels 2026 as a safer space where we can move freely with many like-minded people.
