Our choir consists of more than 40 members, all united by the love of singing. Since 2022 we are conducted by Nancy Meijer. Our repertoire is ranging from classical to jazz and pop. We like to be seen and heard at performances in- and outside Nijmegen. We sing at Rainbow activities and momentous events in Nijmegen.

Cantus Obliquus was founded in 1986 and is the first mixed gay choir in The Netherlands. Nijmegen is our homebase, the oldest city of the country. In the 80’, it was a time of social unrest in which gays and lesbians took to the streets to demand their rights and recognition. We sang militant and offensive songs. At the same time, the choir was a warm safe haven. Cantus still feels as a warm blanket, but its protest signature has worn off. Nowadays, it is more a sociable and close group of people who sing and undertake all sorts of activities, united by the rainbow colours. There is always someone around to talk about common things or to open your heart to.

In 2014 it was the first time we participated in Various Voices in Dublin. Since then we don’t want to miss it. Enjoying to hear other choirs, sing-along, meeting old and making new friends. In Brussels, Cantus Obliquus intends to sing “The stars from the sky” as we say in Dutch. Together with other participants we will colour the city Pink or even better; multicolored!
