Galakoor Queer Klassiek is a classical choir for singers connected by their queer identity. A queer choir singing classical repertoire creates its own interpretation and sound, which is quite unique. The choir also being a community adds to this uniqueness and to the specific quality of the choir.

Galakoor was founded in 2013 by conductor Yt Nicolai and amateur singer Laurens Runderkamp. Yt had been active in the ‘gay movement’ since her student days. In Galakoor – at the time the abbreviation for Gay and Lesbian Amsterdam – she brought her ideals together with her musical ambitions. Until 2017, she was also conductor of the choir. In 2022, we changed our name to Galakoor Queer Klassiek. We have evolved into a choir that wants to be at the center of the community, never losing sight of quality, singing classical songs but also performing pieces like the St. John Passion of J.S. Bach.

Various Voices voor Galakoor Queer Klassiek means a queer singing connection. Various Voices is an experience that is uplifting for all choir members. Various Voices is also the international stage on which Galakoor will sing a new composition by Joost Kleppe who put on music the words that the Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen spoke when the world’s first same sex marriages were closed in the city hall of Amsterdam. The piece celebrates the 25th anniversary of same sex marriage in The Netherlands.
