The „Mainsirenen“ cultivate a-capella singing (with occasional piano accompaniment). Behind the programs and lyrics is neither an educational mission, nor the claim to be part of the fun society. Gay topics, but always with the goal of reaching as many minds and hearts as possible.

In 1987, several young men began meeting to sing together. Beyond their shared joy of singing, these gatherings became a space to express gay identity and engage in public debates often marked by stigma and prejudice. Such experiences soon shaped the themes of the Mainsirenen’s songs and programs. Finding a name tested the group’s democratic spirit: “Äppel-Voices,” “Ebbelwoi-Sisters,” and “Frankfurter Würstchen” were rejected. In 1988, “Die Mainsirenen” was chosen, emphasizing local pride and marking the birth of Frankfurt’s leading gay choir.

Being part of Various Voices is always an unforgettable experience. By listening to and observing other queer choirs from all over Europe, we create new ideas and inspiration while nurturing our shared love of choir music. It’s important to us to highlight the visibility of the gay, lesbian, and queer choral community.
