Classical Lesbians
We are the Classical Lesbians from Berlin: lesbian, classical, a cappella – and one of a kind! Since 1996, we’ve been singing classical choral music with a message: queer, feminist, and always clearly audible. Because lesbian visibility isn’t a style – it’s a statement. Go classical, Lesbians!
Whether it’s Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach or Ethel Smyth – we’re on fire for classical women composers! A highlight: In Bologna, we sang one of Maddalena Casulana’s madrigals in front of an original 16th-century print – goosebumps guaranteed! Our conductor is young, our music often old, and our harmonies are surprising – somewhere between major chords, tritones and lesbian drama. We love crisp entries, bold dissonances – and beer after rehearsal. Our motto? Sing softly – party hard! 🙂
The Classical Lesbians have been around for 30 years – and we’ve been part of Various Voices for 25 of them. So in Brussels, we’re celebrating a double anniversary! We’re looking forward to queer diversity, international solidarity, old friends, new encounters, tons of choral music, and a powerful stand against queerphobia. Brussels – open-minded and deeply European – is the perfect place for us to sing, celebrate, and connect with the queer choral community from all across Europe.
